About Shuswap Highland Protected Area

Located in south-central British Columbia, the Shuswap Highland Protected Area encompasses a rugged and varied terrain defined by forested plateaus, rocky outcrops, and numerous small lakes and wetlands. The protected area acts as an important buffer zone protecting the ecological integrity of the Shuswap Highlands, which lie between the Monashee Mountains and the Thompson Plateau. The elevation ranges from approximately 800 meters to over 1,700 meters, creating a variety of microclimates that support diverse plant and animal species. Coniferous forests dominate the landscape, featuring species such as lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, and Engelmann spruce. The area is home to wildlife including black bears, mule deer, moose, and occasional sightings of mountain caribou and wolves.

Historically, the region has been used by Indigenous peoples for hunting, gathering, and fishing for thousands of years. Today, it is valued for its wilderness appeal and relative remoteness. Recreational opportunities primarily include hiking on unmarked and rugged trails, camping in primitive sites, canoeing and fishing in the small lakes, and wildlife viewing. The area's low visitor numbers create an excellent experience for solitude seekers and backcountry enthusiasts. Its landscape contains several noteworthy features such as scenic hilltop viewpoints offering panoramic views over adjacent valleys and important wetlands that provide habitat for migratory birds. Accessibility is limited, which helps maintain its pristine character and makes it essential for visitors to be well-prepared for variable trail conditions and limited facilities.
